European gas production is shrinking, which could affect the security of supply and the energy independence of the continent in the absence of new production capacities or import routes. EU gas imports increased by 11% in 2017 compared to the previous year. And Romania is one of the least dependent European countries on gas imports, with the potential to become an alternative source of Russian gas to some of the other European states after the start of Black Sea gas production. However, large investments to bring these findings into production await clarification of the tax framework.
