European gas production is shrinking, which could affect the security of supply and the energy independence of the continent in the absence of new production capacities or import routes. EU gas imports increased by 11% in 2017 compared to the previous year. And Romania is one of the least dependent European countries on gas imports, with the potential to become an alternative source of Russian gas to some of the other European states after the start of Black Sea gas production. However, large investments to bring these findings into production await clarification of the tax framework.

DISCUSSION THEMES

  • Why European Energy Infrastructure Projects Are Implemented So Hard In Romania And Not Only?
  • What’s the future of BRUA?

Major investments in the energy sector, the role of nuclear energy in the context of EU decarbonisation policies

  • Can the investments in modernizing old gas storage facilities or in the construction of new ones, the distribution and supply activity be efficient? How would volatility (seasonal and not only) be affected?
  • Regarding the production of renewable energy, is it cost-efficient investment in storage capacity? And who should make such an investment?
  • Many of the local communities in Romania are not yet connected to the gas network. Infrastructure investments as a source to promote the welfare of those communities.
  • Distribution vs supply: first regulated, the second partially liberalized.
  • What’s more profitable? Perspectives.
